The reality, however, is that they aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the same at all.  <\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoobr.com\/niblettes_old\/2006\/02\/11\/remote-associations-and-innovation3\/\" target=\"remote\" rel=\"noopener\">previous post<\/a> I took a stab at visualizing a certain perspective on the cognitive capabilities that distinguish designers from stylists.<\/p>\n<p>Then recently I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hacknot.info\/hacknot\/action\/showEntry?eid=90\" target=\"hack\" rel=\"noopener\">Developers are from Mars, Programmers are from Venus<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hacknot.info\" target=\"hack2\" rel=\"noopener\">Hacknot<\/a> which describes a nearly identical situation in software engineering.  Developers and programmers are also vastly different, in many of the same ways designers and stylists differ.  <\/p>\n<p>Taking this article as a model, here are some of the key difference (some tongue-in-cheek, some entirely serious) between designers and stylists:<\/p>\n<table class=\"nib_table\">\n<tr>\n<th width=50%>Stylists<\/th>\n<th width=50%>Designers<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Fussy pixel-perfectionists who delight in the minute decorative details of the artifact<\/td>\n<td>Appreciate the fine details, but understand that they are only a small, occasionally self-indulgent part of what they do<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Desireability is primary concern<\/td>\n<td>Utility is primary concern<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Shy away from the business (the goals, the models, the metrics, etc)<\/td>\n<td>The business is like their second job, its success or failure is a key measure of their design work<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Tactical<\/td>\n<td>Strategic<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Remains firmly entrenched in their own idiosyncratic subjectivities<\/td>\n<td>Work very hard to get out of their own head, and see the world through their clients\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and users\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 eyes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Obsessed with what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s cool<\/td>\n<td>Obsessed with what works for clients and users<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Doxa<\/td>\n<td>Episteme<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>The solution to any business problem is slicker style (especially if they can make it look like an iPod)<\/td>\n<td>Many solutions often need to be knitted together from multiple disciplines, and harmonizing them together can be more difficult than identifying them individually<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Intuition<\/td>\n<td>Process<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>The ego, the icon, the personality, the signature, the rockstar<\/td>\n<td>The market need, the multi-disciplinary team, edge competencies<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Aesthetics of complexity&#8211;what better way to inspire the awe your self-evident superiority deserves<\/td>\n<td>Philosophy of simplicity&#8211;what better way to help people achieve their goals, create market value, and turn a tidy profit<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>By skill, approach, values and temperament, designers are very different from stylists.
