{"id":197,"date":"2008-11-25T18:45:11","date_gmt":"2008-11-26T01:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scoobr.com\/niblettes_old\/?p=197"},"modified":"2021-06-12T03:36:55","modified_gmt":"2021-06-12T03:36:55","slug":"canada-wont-be-competitive-in-the-21st-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.scoobr.com\/niblettes_old\/2008\/11\/25\/canada-wont-be-competitive-in-the-21st-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Won&#8217;t be Competitive in the 21st Century"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline_image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scoobr.com\/niblettes_old\/wp-images\/inline\/dodo.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Its dangerous to draw conclusions from history that is too fresh, but I&#8217;m going to anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Canada is a country with an essentially\u00a0pre-industrial economy.\u00a0 What I mean by that is our economy is\u00a0based almost\u00a0entirely or natural resource extraction.\u00a0 Sure our extraction methods are more advanced today, but in essence ours is still a pre-industrial economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In other words\u00a0this country is\u00a0a\u00a0one trick pony.\u00a0 This is fine when everyone wants that trick, like when commodity prices are high and demand is strong, as has been the case for several years now.\u00a0 But what happens when demand craters, and prices tumble, as we&#8217;ve seen over the past couple months?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s near complete economic reliance on natural resources is a dangerously precarious position, and one the entire country has willfully ignored while the good times rolled.\u00a0 Unfortunately the good times are over and no one know when they&#8217;ll be back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t to say that low oil price mean the country is going backrupt.\u00a0 Rather it is to say that while times were good and money flowed out of the ground anywhere you stuck a shovel, we had\u00a0the greatest opportunity we\u00a0ever\u00a0haveto diversify what we offer the world, and make sure those good times keep on rolling.<\/p>\n<p>However we squandered this opportunity.\u00a0 Worse we as a nation do not even realize what we have squandered.\u00a0 And the consequences will likely be a slow unraveling or global relevance and economic prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t have to be like this.\u00a0 Canada has an incredible education system,\u00a0and the kinds of cultural freedoms\u00a0necessary\u00a0to allow\u00a0bright people to try crazy ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately Canadians are saddled with the most crushing complacency you&#8217;ll find anywhere.\u00a0\u00a0Your typical\u00a0Canadian&#8217;s highest\u00a0aspiration is to\u00a0get a\u00a0government job.\u00a0 Candian minds and spirits have been left fallow, and so the best leave while the rest remain to exacerbate the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Canada should have the\u00a0creative, cultural and knowledge industries to\u00a0pick up the economic slack of crumbling commodity prices.\u00a0 But we don&#8217;t have these industries because the human mind is the one natural resource this country sadly\u00a0couldn&#8217;t care less about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Its dangerous to draw conclusions from history that is too fresh, but I&#8217;m going to anyway.
